Case Study:
Three Extensions, Full Renovation and Structural Works in Sheffield

At Pristine Building Solutions, we pride ourselves on clear communication, honest advice and delivering complex projects with confidence.

This project in Sheffield is a perfect example of how thoughtful planning and experienced problem-solving can transform a challenging property into a functional family home.

Dr Ramesh approached us after a poor experience with three other builders who visited his property but provided no quote or follow-up. That’s when he contacted Pristine Building Solutions in the hope of finding a company that would listen, advise and deliver.

Following a site visit and detailed discussions about his goals, we provided a comprehensive quote and project plan. The brief was ambitious: to create substantial additional living space so family members could move in, while still preserving as much outdoor space as possible.

The scope of works included:

  • Three new extensions

  • Four bathrooms

  • A new kitchen

  • A new driveway

  • A redesigned garden space.

Together, these works were designed to dramatically increase the home’s internal footprint while carefully balancing the client’s desire to retain a practical and enjoyable outdoor space.

The Challenges

This project presented several significant challenges from the outset.

The main challenge was the existing landscape and access. The garden had a severe fall, with steep banking around the perimeter, and access to the rear of the property was extremely tight. This required careful planning for materials, machinery, and sequencing of works.

The scale of the project was another challenge. Adding three extensions alone is substantial, but this was combined with multiple bathrooms, a full kitchen installation and external works; all while ensuring the garden was not overly compromised.

Finally, the existing bungalow sat higher than the proposed extension locations, creating structural and level-management challenges that needed a robust, long-term solution.

The Solution

After our initial meeting, Dr Ramesh took time to consider our advice and recommendations. Based on our experience, we suggested adjustments to the original layout and approach to improve usability, access and long-term performance.

Following this, the client revised aspects of the plans to better suit both the site and his family’s needs.

To resolve the level differences between the bungalow and the new extensions, we designed and installed gabion baskets approximately 3–4 metres high around the perimeter of the property. This solution not only addressed the height issue but also improved site stability and access during construction.

Once plans were finalised, we took full control of the project. We coordinated our trusted network of professionals, including engineers, groundworkers and specialist contractors, ensuring the build progressed efficiently and to a high standard throughout.

The Build

The project involved constructing three new extensions, which ultimately tripled the home's internal square footage. Alongside this, we installed four bathrooms, a new kitchen and created a purpose-built driveway suitable for the client’s needs.

Despite the site's complexity and the scale of the work, the project was carefully managed from start to finish.

While some challenges arose (as they do on projects of this size), transparent communication and proactive problem-solving ensured issues were resolved quickly and effectively.

The Results

Dr Ramesh achieved exactly what he had envisioned: a significantly larger home with ample space for his family to move in, without sacrificing outdoor living. The newly created garden space is flat and functional, something the client was particularly pleased with, and which he later turfed himself.

Although there were minor snags and contractor coordination challenges along the way, our commitment to honesty, communication and accountability ensured the project stayed on track and delivered the right outcome for the client.

The result is a transformed property that balances internal space, external usability and long-term practicality, and a client who now has the home he originally hoped for, delivered by a team he could trust.
